THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA & DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES - INDIAN OCIAN MARINE RESEARCH FACILITY: WATERMANS BAY
Project Completion Date: September 2015
Project Bduget: $1,500,000.00
Services Involved: Electrical, Communications
The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre (IOMRC) is located at Waterman’s Bay. The site has been developed to provide an integrated teaching and research facility for use by the University of Western Australia (UWA), the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS), Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and IOMRC.
Shamrock Electrics were contracted to decommission & completely refurbish the existing run down premises. This was a very difficult project as the building has an upstairs area for admin, laboratory and teaching areas; the ground floor has an operation sea water intake plant and water treatment plant. We also assisted Western Power with the refurbishment of their high voltage substation and the new site LV incomer main switchboard.
The upstairs area consists of modern communication and lighting systems while the ground floor has a vast arrangement of sea water pumps, filters, tanks, mechanical chiller and VSD’s incorporated in the sea water control systems.
All the equipment had to be marine grade to handle the salt water conditions, including the backup generators etc.
The program was compressed due to the late arrival of equipment and building finishes which were out of our control. Even with these challenges we had the organizing skills and staff to assist the builder with completing the project to an acceptable timeframe.
